Punk Rock Cover Show #7

It’s that time of year again - the Punk Rock Cover show is back. Ska Jeff has been organizing these for a couple years and they are always a blast. This time it features various locals playing the hits from Bad Brains, Descendents, The Germs, Husker Du, The Pixies and Billy Bragg. Here’s a video from the last cover show of The Ramones as covered by Asile, members or which will be back in the Germs cover band this time.

Details:

February 16 @ Mavericks (221 Rideau st). 8pm doors. Music will start exactly at 8:30pm. $5-10 sliding donation. 19+. All money raised from this show is going towards Pussy Riot.

Slim and Popular followed up the Creeps with their great brand of catchy and precise powerpop. The band features members from Thunderuncle, El Beejay and Harshey and word on the street is that they are almost done mixing their debut album. Drummer Tiff also seems to be back in Canada fulltime after getting deported last year for having an accent. Good to see the boys back on stage.

The Mercy Buckets kicked off the Centretown Holiday Bash with some lovely country ditties. I believe this was just their second show (with their third the following night) but Casey, Richard, Tim and Patrick have been sharing the stage in one form or another since I moved to Ottawa in bands like The Glads, Centretown Wilderness Club, The Halfmilers, Shakey Aches and more. Here they are covering the Carter Family song Orphan Child.

Here we have a video from the Holiday Bash of Yuma County. Yuma started as a solo project for Dave Banoub (of The Allrights, Menmonics, etc), with support from his wife Mel, for the Centretown Recording challenges which this show partly celebrated and has since grown into a live band. They played their first show over the summer as a two piece featuring guitar and an iPad, and have since grown to 5, with support from members of The Johnnies, The Divide and The Glads. This was their second show as a 5 piece.

Continuing with the parade of bands from the Centretown Holiday Bash this weekend is The Divide. This is the solo project of Jon Hynes formally of the Hidden Cameras (and still tours with them occasionally) as well as some other Toronto favorites like Gentlemen Reg. He has recently finished an upcoming solo album which he recorded himself, however this was the premier of his live band which features members of the Allrights and Johnnies (and Mnemonics on this evening). Jon pulls from a wide range of musical influences mixing indie, rock, powerpop and folk and wraps it up in a more technical package then any of those genres would suggest. His east coast background also peeks through occasionally.

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash. Dec 14, 2012 at Cafe Dekcuf. Finderskeepers playing ‘In Your Bones’. We have featured this band previously and I have to note that they are aging like a fine wine. Possibly, quicker, in fact it’s a bad analogy because reserves take quite a while to really have perceived value. They are aging faster than a fine wine and their music will have you headbanging like a mullet-having drunkard at a Kim Mitchell concert.

A powerpop that is genuinely rock and roll. Don’t worry about running from your pop sweet tooth, their catchy hooks aren’t so shameless that I couldnt call it new wave. A perfect storm of classic punk rock and rock and roll riffs.

Thunderuncle plays a classic sound having played a Judas Priest cover it is easy to see where they take some influence and run with it. A great band with a tight sound and definitely an entertaining addition to any bill.

Garage music is often replicated and imitated by trending peers. There are a lot of kids riding the crest- so to speak. It’s discouraging seeing trends that rise out of popularity and not often out of attitude and creativity and absorb themselves into the punk rock community. Where others make this angle duller with each imitation Ryan takes this sound and runs (or drunkenly stumbles… quickly), having grown it greasier and unforgiving over the years as he grows as a songwriter. Picture the music, if you will, writhing about in broken glass as your onlookers clap their hands to the rhythm, shake their tambourines and overflowing beer bottles, and dance through the night.
