It’s that time of year again - the Punk Rock Cover show is back. Ska Jeff has been organizing these for a couple years and they are always a blast. This time it features various locals playing the hits from Bad Brains, Descendents, The Germs, Husker Du, The Pixies and Billy Bragg. Here’s a video from the last cover show of The Ramones as covered by Asile, members or which will be back in the Germs cover band this time.

Details:

February 16 @ Mavericks (221 Rideau st). 8pm doors. Music will start exactly at 8:30pm. $5-10 sliding donation. 19+. All money raised from this show is going towards Pussy Riot.

Carrying their recent momentum from a European tour and sparkling new recordings they are another great example of Ottawa’s ability to remain competitive in all aspects of the music scene.
You can grab Dave’s more solo-y versions of their recordings here:

You can check out some holiday songs of his for free below:

Dec 14, 2012 at Cafe Dekcuf. Finderskeepers playing ‘In Your Bones’. We have featured this band previously and I have to note that they are aging like a fine wine. Possibly, quicker, in fact it’s a bad analogy because reserves take quite a while to really have perceived value. They are aging faster than a fine wine and their music will have you headbanging like a mullet-having drunkard at a Kim Mitchell concert.

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash....

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash. Dec 14, 2012 at Cafe Dekcuf. Guitars blazing, pop oozing, drums raging, this is the Mnemonics. A powerpop that is genuinely rock and roll. Don’t worry about running from your pop sweet tooth, their catchy hooks aren’t so shameless that I couldnt call it new wave. A perfect storm of classic punk rock and rock and roll riffs.

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash....

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash. An attestment to Chris as a musician, performing solo amidst punk rock, metal, and otherwise energy packed bands, he still managed to captivate the audience standing alone playing his gentle music. Follow up with Chris Page on his bandcamp and listen to his recordings.

Dec 14, 2012 at Cafe Dekcuf. Four Stroke is no stranger to the Ottawa community performing punk rock with classic energy, agression, and being captivating as ever.

Speaking for themselves, “Pieced together from the discarded leftovers of Ottawa bands such as moral hazard, Harshey, Russell’s Big Day, the Weapons of Mass Seduction and the Goddamn, four-stroke has been subjecting the citizens of Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, North Bay, and points in between to their unique blend of punk styles since the summer of 2003.”

Dec 14, 2012 at Cafe Dekcuf. Thunderuncle plays a classic sound having played a Judas Priest cover it is easy to see where they take some influence and run with it. A great band with a tight sound and definitely an entertaining addition to any bill.

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash....

Captured during the Centretown Recording Alliance Holiday Bash. There are a lot of kids riding the crest- so to speak. It’s discouraging seeing trends that rise out of popularity and not often out of attitude and creativity and absorb themselves into the punk rock community. Where others make this angle duller with each imitation Ryan takes this sound and runs (or drunkenly stumbles… quickly), having grown it greasier and unforgiving over the years as he grows as a songwriter. Picture the music, if you will, writhing about in broken glass as your onlookers clap their hands to the rhythm, shake their tambourines and overflowing beer bottles, and dance through the night.

Male Nurse performing at Cafe Alt (Ottawa University) in...

Male Nurse performing at Cafe Alt (Ottawa University) in September 2012 with Heavy Bedroom and Black Walls (Toronto).
